
WHAT DOES A SPEECH‐LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST (SLP) DO?
Speech-language pathologist (sometimes called speech therapist) assess and treat people who have speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders
Why would someone see a speech-language pathologist?
They help people develop skills like comprehension, clarity, voice, fluency, and sound production. Speech Therapy can treat childhood communication disorders and adult speech speech-language, swallowing or cognitive impairments caused by a stroke, brain injury, radiation therapy or neurological disorders.

WHAT DO SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST WORK ON?
In Children

Developmental or aquired speech and language delays and disorders such as:

Auditory listening skills due to hearing loss

Articulation or Phonology

Communication disorders because of Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Autism spectrum disorders or a hearing loss

Social skills

Stuttering Dysfluency)

Voice

In Adults
-
Cognitive disorders resulting in possible challenges with one or a few of the following: attention, executive functioning, memory, orientation, problem solving and reasoning.

Dysfluency disorders, known as stuttering

Motor speech disorders often referred to either dysarthria or apraxia following a stroke, injury to the brain (TBI), tumors radiation induced, or due to degenerative neurological disorders. The dysarthrias are characterized by one or more of the following: weakness, incoordination, or paralysis of the speech musculature. Apraxia can make saying the intended sounds or words difficult.

Language disorders due to a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Typically referred to as Aphasia where the individual has difficulty understanding, speaking, reading, or writing

Swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) resulting in difficulty with swallowing due to a stroke, TBI, radiation induced or as a result of surgery.

Voice disorders due to paralyzed vocal cords, vocal nodules, radiation induced or dysphonia due to vocal abuse or laryngeal penetration reflux. Some patients who have experienced a total laryngectomy will require services to learn how to speak using a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP) as well as manage the device.
